The Abashiri River runs in front of Abashiri Prison. The river was important to the prison as a channel for bringing in everyday commodities and transporting manure to farms. In the photo at left, a mannquin in a prison uniform is about to leave the watergate to transport night-soil buckets on a raft, just as inmates did in olden days.
